Codexe vs MCreator: which one to make Minecraft mods and plugins
Both help you make Minecraft content without starting from an empty Java project, but they work in very different ways.
The short answer
MCreator is a free desktop application: you build a mod element by element (items, blocks, procedures) in a visual editor, and it generates the code. It is a good fit if you like building step by step, offline, with full visual control.
Codexe runs in the browser: you describe the mod, plugin or datapack in plain words and it writes real source code, compiles it, fixes the errors and lets you test the result on a real Minecraft server. It is a good fit when you want a working result fast, or logic that is hard to build with blocks.
Side by side
| MCreator | Codexe | |
|---|---|---|
| How you build | Visual editor and procedure blocks | A description in plain words, then changes in a chat |
| Where it runs | Desktop app (Windows, macOS, Linux) | Browser, nothing to install |
| Project types | Forge and NeoForge mods built in; more (like Fabric or Spigot) through community plugins | Spigot, Paper, Folia and proxy plugins, Fabric and Forge mods, datapacks, Skript, Discord bots, websites |
| Code | Generated from the elements you create | Real Java (or Kotlin, Python, JavaScript) you can read, edit and keep |
| Checking the result | You run the game from the app to test | Compiled and repaired before delivery; test servers with test players |
| Price | Free | Free plan with daily tokens; downloads with a plan or a download pack |
When MCreator is the better choice
- You want to learn modding concepts by assembling elements yourself.
- You work offline, or want a free tool with no usage limits.
- Your mod is mostly content (items, blocks, recipes, mobs) that the visual editor covers well.
When Codexe is the better choice
- You need a server plugin (Spigot, Paper, Folia, BungeeCord, Velocity), a datapack, a Skript or a Discord bot, not only a mod.
- The logic is complex (economies, minigames, databases, GUIs, cooldowns) and easier to describe than to assemble.
- You want to try it on a real server before installing it anywhere.
- You want source code you can continue by hand or hand to a developer.
Can you use both?
Yes. They solve different problems: MCreator for building a mod visually, Codexe for generating mods, plugins and datapacks from a description. Codexe also explains its code in the chat if you are learning.
