How to make a Minecraft mod without coding
Updated October 18, 2026
A mod adds things the vanilla game does not have: new blocks, items, tools, armour, mobs. It is a Java project for a mod loader, Fabric or Forge, and normally that means learning Java, Gradle and the loader's API. With Codexe you describe the mod instead, and it writes the project and compiles it into a mod .jar.
Change the example to the mod you want.
Generate this with CodexeStep by step
1.Pick the loader and version
Use the loader and Minecraft version your game or modpack runs, for example "Fabric 1.21.1" or "Forge 1.20.1". For NeoForge, say NeoForge explicitly. Without a version, mods are made for 1.20.1.
2.Describe what the mod adds
Each item or block with its name, what it does, its stats (damage, durability, mining speed) and how it is crafted. Precise behaviour beats long stories.
3.Say where it runs
Client-only (HUD, keybinds), server-only, or both. Mods that add content must be installed on the server and on every client.
4.Let Codexe write and compile it
Codexe writes the Gradle project, the mod descriptor (
fabric.mod.jsonormods.toml), the code, recipes and language file, and compiles it. The first mod build often takes a few minutes while the toolchain downloads.5.Add your textures
Generated mods come with placeholder textures. Replace the PNG files in
assets/<modid>/textures/with your own, keeping the same names, then build again.6.Install and play it
Download the mod .jar and put it in the
mods/folder of a game with the same loader and version installed (for Fabric, also Fabric API). Test servers do not run mods yet, so try it in your own client.7.Ask for changes in the chat
"The hammer breaks bedrock, it should not" is enough. Codexe edits the code and compiles again.
What to write
- Content: every item, block, tool, armour piece or mob, with a name.
- Behaviour: what happens on use, on hit, while held or worn, with numbers.
- Recipes: the crafting pattern or smelting input for each item.
- World generation: for ores, the dimension and height range.
- Creative tab and names: where items appear and their English names.
- Other mods: any dependency besides Fabric API, such as Cloth Config or Mod Menu.
Example description
"A Fabric mod for Minecraft 1.21.1 called Gems. Adds a sapphire ore that generates in the overworld between Y -60 and 16, a sapphire gem dropped by it, and sapphire tools (sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel) between iron and diamond in strength. A Sapphire Staff that gives Speed II for 10 seconds on right click, 30-second cooldown. Crafting recipes for everything, all items in a Gems creative tab, English names. Textures can be placeholders."
What you get
Generating and compiling are free on the free plan (50,000 tokens refilled every 24 hours). Downloading the .jar or the source needs a plan or a download pack.
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
| Mod .jar | The compiled mod for the mods/ folder, checked to contain its fabric.mod.json or mods.toml |
| Source ZIP | The whole Gradle project, to keep editing or hand to a developer |
| Assets | Language file, models and placeholder textures you can replace |
Questions
Is this like MCreator?
Both make mods without code. MCreator builds them element by element in an editor; Codexe writes the code from a description and compiles it. See Codexe vs MCreator.
Fabric or Forge?
Use the loader your modpack or friends already use. Fabric is lighter and usually updates first; Forge and NeoForge have large mod lists on some versions. See Fabric vs Forge.
Can I play it on a server with friends?
Yes. Put the same .jar in the server's mods/ folder and in every player's, all with the same loader and version.
Do I need a mod at all?
If you only want new rules, commands or recipes on a server, a plugin or a datapack lets players join without installing anything. See plugin vs mod.
